World Toilet Summit and Expo 2008

Yes. You read that right. An entire convention dedicated to all things about the potty!

The World Toilet Summit & Expo, to be held in Macau in November this year, is already into its 9th year. Part from garnering giggles and even outright laughter, the event has been spreading the word that the toilet and sanitation industry is one of serious business. According to its statistics, there are an estimated 2.6 billion people around the world who remain without proper sanitation facilities. Also,1.8 million children die of diarrheal diseases every year.

Not so funny anymore is it? The World Toilet Organisation (WTO) has set a Millennium Development Goal to halve the proportion of people without proper sanitation access by 2015. Unfortunately, they’ve realised that this goal may not be attainable after all as 40% of the world’s population still has no access to basic sanitation. Therefore, they’ve declared 2008 as International Year of Sanitation to promote clean toilets and address sanitation and hygiene issues.

Some of the main presentations and workshops that will take place involve the discussion of issues such as, creating a sustainable marketplace for sanitation, the best practices and case studies of those practices, capacity building, sanitation technology and solutions, as well as policies and standards of sanitation.

One of the main concerns of the summit is to address the issue of proper sanitation for people living in rural areas. Most of these people are still defecating in public areas and exposing themselves to harmful bacteria. Cleaners of these areas are also at risk as they do not practice proper hygiene when handling the waste. The event will therefore also touch on proper training and education for these workers.

In addition to these, the event will also feature a marketplace. This is essentially a discussion platform which brings together the private, public and humanitarian sectors in an effort to explore new sanitation solutions for the world. Discussions will be held on matters such as sanitary ware and fittings, facility management, cleaning and maintenance, sewerage management, and a host of other related services.

One of the most important aspects of the event is the drive to eliminate the taboo that surrounds the discussion of issues relating to sanitation and hygiene. Many societies still prefer not to address such issues out of embarrassment. However, openly discussing such issues will ultimately lead to the acceleration of the progress on sanitation and health.

Meanwhile, The Expo will work towards improving sanitation in these rural as well as urban areas. It also aims to encourage corporate participants to provide holistic solutions for the restroom and sanitation industries.

Since the event is to be held in November, more details will arise as we approach the date.
